Greed and avarice, in older documents also pleonexia (graspingness, pleonexia)

Auch in: DE EL ES FR ID LT LV PT RU UK

The excessive, insatiable and therefore pathological desire for wealth, for fortune. – It is characteristic that the greedy person – does not focus on the useful use, not on the economic use and – also not – in contrast to the miser – on the yield of an asset. He – is mainly concerned with the possession as such, which gives him temporary satisfaction (momentarily satisfaction). As a rule – greed is connected with narrowing down to one’s own interests – with complete disregard for the rights of others (a pleonestic person will pursue his own interests with complete disregard for the rights of others and even for the considerations of common humanity). Also – it seems proven that greed increases in old age – unlike most other vices – and – that the desire to have more torments a person more than the enjoyment of wealth satisfies. – It is completely wrong, however, to describe this aberration of a personality to the free-market system in general and especially as being attached to money, or to relate it to the calculability of money. According to the evidence of history, greed existed in every kind of social and economic order. It will not disappear from people even in the much-desired and fervently awaited glorious future of true socialism. – See actus-purus principle, argyromania, chremagogy, avarice, money abolition, money ethics, money faith, money shark, money obsession, money squeezer, money raper, money philosophy, money calculativeness, money psychology, grosskoz, harpax, mammonism, misochrematism, pantheism, monetary, thrift, symbol theory.
