In the case of a bank, the balancing of customer deposits with shorter repayment terms on the one hand and loans granted with longer terms on the other. The contribution of an individual transaction to the term transformation is often referred to as the structure contribution. The maturity transformation result of a bank is the sum of the structure contributions. In 2010, twenty percent of the interest income (interest receivable) of all German banks was attributable to maturity transformation. – However, if deposits and loans, the main liabilities and assets on a bank’s balance sheet, have similar maturities, then maturity transformation no longer exists. An increase in the money supply itself of more than ten percent would be inflation neutral if the average maturity of liabilities did not increase. Since about 2005, this relationship has been discussed extensively. – See deposits, maturity matching, real estate funds, open, inflation, intermediation, core mission, banking, credit prohibition, liquidity management, savings bonds, securitization.
