Voucher (coupon; barter slip)

Auch in: DE

A written document or an electronic voucher that guarantees the holder the purchase of a good – such as the new creation of a confectioner – or a service – such as the examination of glasses by an optician. – As a rule, this is a gift cheque or gift voucher. The issuer is legally obligated to any third party to redeem the voucher, even if the name of a beneficiary is entered. In Germany, an unlimited voucher can be redeemed for three years. – A conversion coupon is given when the customer returns a previously purchased good to the merchant and the merchant issues a receipt for the corresponding amount in return. – Unless expressly agreed otherwise, the voucher holder is generally not entitled to payment of the value in money. In this respect, vouchers are also not to be regarded as monetary surrogates, and their circulation is governed exclusively by private law. – Exchange voucher: a token that takes the place of money and entitles the holder to obtain goods and services. – See Abolition of money, Brand, Mutualism.
