Service hall, counter area

Until about 1980, it was common practice at the larger banks to have a large area – usually very high: the height was regarded by some as an expression of the importance of the institution – in which business was conducted at counters. Gradually, these halls were redesigned and individual service points (locations where bank employees come into contact with the customer) were set up to improve customer proximity. – See bank counter, public authority management, banking, money temple, cultural sponsorship, McDonaldization, queuing.
