In Germany, a fee paid to the emperor by free imperial estates being subjected directly to the German emperor in order to secure their legal status vis-à-vis imperial princes. – In some German cities and territorial states, as well as in Austria and Switzerland, a tribute to be paid by individuals of Jewish faith (Judentribut) on the grounds that they had to protect themselves from possible attacks: a protection money. – See Bewachungsgeld, Geleitgeld, Schuldschein-Beurkundungsgeld, Synagogengeld, Toleranzgeld.
