Philosophy of money

Auch in: DE FR

A body of doctrine that attempts to fathom the effects of money on the “inner world,” i.e., on people’s attitude toward life, on the interconnectedness of their destinies, and on the general way of life of mankind in all areas (its “culture”: the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group). The most important representative is Georg Simmel (1858-1918), whose profound “Philosophy of Money” – first published in 1900; since then many new editions – is difficult to understand for those who do not know Latin without a good dictionary of foreign words. – See actus purus principle, argyromania, omnipotence doctrine, equivalence principle, initial fact, economic, chremagogy, chremaphobia, chrematonomy, avarice, money abolition, money consciousness, money ethics, money psychology, money calculativeness, money pride, money theory, greed, mammonism, misochrematism, pantheism, monetary, thrift, thrift rule, symbol theory, ungoods.
