Phishing (also referred to in German)

In the financial market, a criminal attempt – to elicit access data (such as login name, password, pin code, transaction authentication number, TAN) from a bank customer (since 2004, increasingly also from a mail-order or auction house customer), primarily via e-mail traffic and fake Internet pages, and less frequently by telephone call, – in order to then rob the customer’s account. – Phishing significantly damages the Internet economy by undermining trust in online banking and other web services. – Phishing is difficult to combat because the fake mails and sites, often distributed from offshore financial centers, are almost indistinguishable from the real ones, and therefore many households and even companies are fooled. – The name is derived – either from “fishing”; where the substitution of the Eff by a Peha is a in the technical language of Internet insiders (Leetspeak [also spelled Leetspeek] = the substitution of letters by similar looking numeric characters or codes, as well as by different sequence of characters: Heteroklita, Hypallage) is a not rarely encountered alienation, or else – the expression goes back to password harvesting fishing. In 2005, around 12,000 phishing pages per month appeared in Germany alone. – See financial agent, sledgehammer attack, IT risks, purchase orders, unauthorized, pharming, legal risks. – Cf. BaFin Annual Report 2005, p. 185 (criminal transfer to financial agents who receive commission for this), p. 194 (no possibilities for BaFin to stop such manipulations), Deutsche Bundesbank Monthly Report of December 2006, p. 101 f. (international legal uncertainties), BaFin Annual Report 2007, p. 181 (phishing in pump and dump), p 215 (phished amounts are transferred to Baltic states by phishing fraudsters), and the respective BaFin Annual Report, chapter “Supervision of Securities Trading and the Investment Business” and chapter “Cross-Sectional Responsibilities.
