Hedge fund loans (credits to hedge fund credits)

Auch in: DE

Loans granted by banks and pension funds to hedge funds, usually with longer-term contracts. In mid-2005, bank loans to hedge funds in Germany accounted for significantly less than one percent of loans to non-banks, and the leverage of funds affiliated with German institutions did not exceed two. – Loans to hedge funds on the part of a bank are classified as highly dangerous if the hedge fund takes in securitized securities of the bank that have been placed with it, i.e. buys them and reports them as assets. From an economic point of view, the risks then remain with the originator, namely with the bank or the intermediary special purpose vehicle. – Loans granted by hedge funds to companies; often to firms facing insolvency. – See cannibalization, back-to-originator postulate, supervision, indirect, brokerage, financial oncologist, leverage, hedge fund strategies, nonperforming loans, restructuring, support, tacit. – Cf. BaFin Annual Report 2004, p. 18 (figures on money inflows into hedge funds), BaFin Annual Report 2005, p. 28 f. (business links of German banks to hedge funds), and the respective BaFin Annual Report, chapter “Supervision of Securities Trading and Investment Business.”
