Financial language and, more rarely, financial technolect (financial [market] terminology, financial technolect)

Auch in: DE FR

Words, expressions and idioms (jargon) that are – or used to be – common in the financial world and – are immediately understood by those working there in their sense, in their meaning. – More than in other specialized languages – with the possible exception of information technology – English – formerly French and before that Italian – vocabulary accumulates in financial language today. Linguists distinguish between – displacing anglicisms, such as banker, cash flow, – differentiating anglicisms, such as bubble economy, blue chips and – supplementing anglicisms, such as Airbus, oldtimer. – It should be noted, however, especially in the case of the group of displacing anglicisms, that they acquired a very special conceptual content through frequent use in the financial world. By using a German word, these expressions – such as container banking by container bank – cannot always be rendered accurately. – As one can clearly see from their publications, many of the linguists (philologists) who fiercely criticize financial language are ultimately unaware of the individual characteristics – namely, units of thought that include very specific properties and contexts – that a technical term has taken on in the practice of the financial world. – This, of course, does not exclude criticism of the professional language of the financial world; especially when terms and language formulations (phrasing, verbalization) are deliberately used to disguise unpleasant facts (euphemisms;
misms: the replacement of an indirect, mild or vague expression for one which unmistakably and clearly denotes an unpleasant fact). – See acataphasia, analyst rating, anglicisms, prudential mechanism, uniform, stock market language, financial industry, financial world, linguistic imperialism, intelligibility.
