Children’s allowance

Supplement to salary (especially for civil servants) for dependent children. – Payments by the state to families or single and divorced persons for children; usually independent of the income of the legal guardians. Such transfer payments are preferable to the subsidization of certain goods (such as milk) recommended by some, because they reach the target group directly (otherwise even recipients [CH: Bezüger] of high incomes lavishly feed their cats with subsidized milk). – On the other hand, the direct payment of child benefits in socially disadvantaged families is often misused for additional consumption by the male guardian living in the household (beer money).
