Coin initially made only of silver, later of a mixture of copper and silver, with the copper portion exceeding the silver portion in terms of quantity. The coin was produced in Bern from the middle of the 15th century until the middle of the 19th century and came into circulation from there, especially in southern Germany. In Switzerland, the franc was introduced in 1850, and seven batzen were exchanged for one franc. – The name “Batzen” probably derives from Bätz, Petz = bear, still the heraldic animal of Bern.
