Entity
From about 2000 onwards, the word “entity” has been widely used in the German language in various meanings, namely – in general for a single piece (element) out of a multitude of possible pieces (elements) – of the real (tangible, graspable) world or – of mental ideas. In both cases a specimen (instance), a manifestation, a clearly determinable and therefore well distinguishable thing (in short: that which is perceived or known or inferred to have its own distinct existence, if living or nonliving). – Hence, in the financial world, also said of – an economic subject acting on the financial market as a provider or demander of financial services – or sometimes besides in the meaning of a precisely described sum of interest-bearing capital. – Since around 1990, it has also referred to – mostly international – bodies in the financial world, such as the International Deposit Insurance Association, which describes itself as such in its printed materials. – An administrative unit organized under public or private law – such as a fund, foundation, promotional association, friends’ association – to provide money for a specific purpose, such as regional promotion or the granting of scholarships. – Since around 2005, a very broadly used generic term, especially in financial journalism, for organization, institution, body, entity, legal entity, business, provided that the persons referred to have their own legal personality or are unambiguously distinguishable from one another (an inexplicit generic term with in particular broad meanings like person, partnership, organization, enterprise, or business, provided that it has a legal and separately identifiable, discernable existence). – See address, customer, organism, legal entity.
