Wealth in older documents in relation to also opulence (richness, wealthiness, opulence; national wealth)

Auch in: DE ES FI ID PL TR

The economic situation of a person in which the total of available assets substantially exceeds the average level of material well-being among other members in society. – In many older and more recent authors, wealth is described as something fundamentally bad, as a character-corrupting evil. But this can hardly be justified in general terms. For wealth – frees a person from overburdened concern for subsistence – provides him with the opportunity to work on the increase of his knowledge and the improvement of his dispositions – is protection against acts of injustice, flattery (flattery), lying and self-alienation (self-alienation), which easily arise from the tormenting situation of concern for economic survival, – provides determination and courage to stand up for truth and justice, because and insofar as the rich person can express himself independently and without fear of economic pressure from others (reprisals); reprisals) and – offers the opportunity to do something for the benefit of the poor and needy. – That wealth always leads to the subordination of the education of the own person, to avarice, pride, intemperance, contempt of others and to the oppression of fellow men, cannot be deduced conclusively from history in general and from economic history in particular. – In the older national economic literature, the real assets (roughly: machinery, buildings, land, durable consumer goods) of a country plus all conditions that serve a lasting development of the economic forces in an economy, also called national wealth. – See argyromania, chrematology, hoard of precious metals, financial assets, avarice, money resources, money shark, money theology, money obsession, greed, harpax, mammonism, thrift, philosopher’s stone, ungoods, traffic accident, wealth, prosperity, wealth position.
