Wayside duty

In older documents, a levy for the construction and ongoing maintenance of a road embankment, especially for securing dangerous parts of the terrain such as steep slopes (steeps). All vehicles using the road in question were liable to pay. Persons on foot and on horseback were generally exempt from paying the duty. – See Chausseegeld, Furtgeld, Maut.
