Payment to the member of an orchestra who plays on his or her own stringed instrument and is responsible for keeping it in good order and condition at all times. – In music schools, the amount to be paid by students to replace the cost of consumables such as strings, sheet music, mouthpieces or cleaning materials, i.e. not related solely to the care of stringed instruments. – In older documents, also the remuneration for musicians appointed to perform. – See instrument money, music money, reed money, consumption money.
