Stock exchange concentration, European (consolidation of European stock exchanges)

Auch in: DE FR

In mid-2005, the European stock exchange industry had the highest degree of concentration of any sector. Four exchanges (Deutsche Börse AG, London Stock Exchange, Euronext and Euroclear) accounted for over eighty percent of all turnover achieved in trading and clearing. – At the beginning of February 2012, the EU Commission prohibited a transatlantic merger of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange with the exchange in New York. This had been long announced and already prepared in detail; the costs for consultants and lawyers for this amounted to around EUR 100 million. – Cf. ECB Monthly Report, November 2007, p. 67 ff. (Structural changes on the stock market and consolidation of stock exchanges; detailed presentation).
