Statistical agency

Auch in: DE FR

Public agency entrusted with the collection and processing of data in a country. – Not only monetary policy but also almost all other policy areas, such as economic policy, social policy or transport policy, depend on the figures collected locally. Decisions in all areas must therefore be based on accurate, reliable figures. To ensure this, the national statistical authorities should not only have the appropriate personnel and equipment, but also far-reaching independence. – The Greek crisis in 2009 was originally caused by incorrect budget figures. The EU Commission took this as an opportunity to demand the right to check the validity of data submitted to it on the spot. – See Eurostat, Stability and Growth Pact, Basic errors, Blocked account, Statistics. – Cf. ECB Monthly Bulletin, March 2011, p, 123 et seq. (Code of Practice for Statistical Authorities; a pan-European statistical office as a long-term goal).
