In older documents, a coin of silver long important for trade in northern Europe, circulated as a common currency by agreement between the cities of Lübeck, Hamburg, Lüneburg and Wismar in 1506. Marks produced according to the minting agreement usually have the coats of arms of the city where they were minted on the obverse, and the shields of the others – placed in a triangle – on the reverse. – See Mark.
