An earlier payment that parishes were required to make when the bishop in charge visited them. Originally a payment in kind for the upkeep of the chief shepherd staying on site to supervise (visitation; Visitation) and administer the sacrament of Confirmation, the fee was transformed into a payment in money and in 1338 was designated by Pope Benedict XII for various countries as a basically fixed fee. – See indulgence money, abatement, annates, confession money, charisterium, dispensation money, cathedral money, church money, offering money, palliative money, St. Peter’s penny, quatember money, seminary money.
