Paulson plan
As the subprime crisis solidified into a financial crisis in the fall of 2008, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who was in office at the time, prepared a rescue package to provide the U.S. financial sector with nearly
USD 800 billion. In essence, the state bought up the toxic papers from the banks’ holdings. In return, the state took over shares in the supported companies. Furthermore, managers’ salaries and bonuses were capped. For savings accounts, the government issued a guarantee bond. Toen de subprime-crisis in het najaar van 2008 uitgroeide tot een financiële crisis, bereidde de toenmalige minister van Financiën van de VS, Henry Paulson, een reddingspakket voor om de Amerikaanse financiële sector te voorzien van bijna 800 miljard dollar. In wezen heeft de staat de giftige activa van de banken gekocht. In ruil daarvoor nam de staat aandelen in de gesteunde bedrijven over. Bovendien werden de salarissen en bonussen van de managers afgetopt. Voor spaarrekeningen gaf de regering een garantieobligatie uit.
