Microinsurance firm

An insurance company that – due to a fixed business policy – targets only a certain group (e.g. rice farmers) or – due to insufficient demand for insurance services is limited to a small number of policyholders. – Experience has shown that these institutions, which are frequently found in countries of the so-called Third World – and are advocated by well-meaning groups in industrialized countries – are easily threatened by (fraudulently induced) insolvency, especially if no supervisory authority in the country concerned monitors the business activity. – See supervision, insurance companies, insurance contract. – Cf. BaFin Annual Report 2006, p. 64 (Roundtable on Microinsurers in the Third World).
