manumission payment (ransom)

The amount of money formerly payable by a bondman (bondman, villain) for release from serfdom (villainage, peonage: in manorial system a condition of compulsory servitude by which a person is restrained of his or her liberty and obliged to work for a lord of the manor; manor = lordship over land and subjects), also called manumission payment and lytrum. – The ransom (redemption) of a forcibly and unlawfully seized and detained – person (hostage; hostage; also prisoner of war; prisoner of war) or – property, especially a ship, against payment of cash, in older documents also called ranzion – Sometimes also said of dispensation money in all its meanings. – See fersengeld, freikaufgeld, fudelgeld, colonatikum, ransom insurance, ranzion.
