Lottery

Auch in: DE FR

A special type of gambling game. The main difference to gambling in the sense of § 284 StGB is that the lottery requires the existence of a game plan. This is regularly specified by the organizer. The game plan regulates the game operation in general and specifies the conditions for participation. – A sport bet is not a lottery, since the player can determine his stake himself. In addition, the odds between the bettor and the bookmaker are individual for each match pairing; they are determined each time. – A lottery can be distinguished from a raffle, where the winnings are not in money, but in objects. If this takes place in a closed society (e.g. parish festival, company anniversary), an official permit is not required. Otherwise, any form of public gambling operation requires official approval. Contrary to widespread opinion, however, gambling companies are not subject to supervision by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), even though considerable sums are moved in this area and the market has become rather confusing. – See financial betting, lottery bond, betting office.
