small-sized loan: Lending by a bank primarily to small and medium-sized enterprises; sometimes loans to households and home loans are also included. – From the point of view of banks, such loans to small and medium-sized enterprises are associated with higher costs than large loans, and they therefore generally contribute little to a bank’s profits. As a result, banks are reluctant to lend to SMEs (partly because of Basel II). This, in turn, is the reason why it pays to set up credit factories – in Germany also with the support of politicians. – See profit, operating, founder bank, cost efficiency, credit factory, credit crunch, credit mediator, microfinance, loss-loan relationship. – Cf. ECB Monthly Bulletin of May 2013, pp. 44 et seq. (detailed statistics on loans to SMEs), ECB Monthly Bulletin of July 2014, pp. 87 et seq. (basic information on SMEs’ access to credit; overviews; references).
