In the past, payment was demanded mainly by the inhabitants of residence cities in Germany for lighting the city at night, usually between September and April. The proceeds of the levy were used to pay the oil refillers and lantern servants (men whose job was to hang and light the lamps and who were also responsible for supervising their proper use; the duties of the lantern servants are listed in detail in old ordinances). – See lighting money, candle money, light money.
