Inspection fee

Auch in: DE FR

Fee that used to be paid to an inspector (Geschauer, Geschauherr, Schaumeister; quality control inspector) appointed and sworn in by the authorities – sometimes also by the guild – for his services, especially in the course of monitoring the quality (Geschau) of – foodstuffs such as meat (Fleischbeschau; meat inspection), bread, brandy and beer, – woven goods, – horses and – coins. In some areas, the inspector was also responsible for checking the cleanliness of streams on behalf of the territorial lordship; in this case, the inspection fee had to be paid from the municipal treasury. – In quite a few old ordinances, the offering of certain goods was only permitted if a master foamer had determined the quality level for the product in question and had affixed a seal or stamp to it. This was especially true for expensive woven goods, such as hosiery knitting. In some cases, a product even had to be inspected by two hosiers sworn in as master foamers according to officially prescribed characteristics and also approved by a merchant active in the hosiery trade as sworn in master foamers. When several people were involved in the quality inspection, the term “quality inspectorate” was used. The quality inspectorate’s stamping of fine textiles in particular made a significant contribution to market transparency and attracted products of the highest quality on the supply side. – See creditworthiness class, rating, farmhouse prices.
