Gulden also Gülden and Guldein (guilder)

Auch in: DE FR PT

Old coin that served as a means of payment, especially in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. Its metal, contrary to what the name suggests, was not necessarily gold. – The purchasing power of the old guilder – and this also applies to all other monetary units – can be calculated solely from the local earnings of a day laborer, also called diëtarius, diurnist, lidl and diëist in old documents, which were valid at that time. It cannot be derived by “recurrent connection” – that is, more or less accurate conversion tables. – It is one of the most difficult tasks in economic history to determine the purchasing power of a sum mentioned in older documents and expressed in guilders or other monetary units. Between 1600 and 1850 alone, a good thirty different florins were in circulation in today’s Germany, one after the other and sometimes side by side as a means of payment. Unfortunately, it is a fact that the grossest of errors often occur in value statements, and that even by renowned historians amounts are mentioned that are completely wrong. – The monetary unit (NLG) of the Netherlands until the introduction of the EUR in 1999. – See Amalfiner, Dareiko, Florentine, coin, historical, coinsParadox, numismatics, stater, verbittsgeld.
