Geleitgeld also Konvoigeld and Péage (protection duty)

Auch in: DE FI FR

A payment in cash for the fact that travelers were accompanied by armed men for protection when crossing a district. – Originating from the time of club law (rule of force), this tax, often deplored by merchants, persisted in Germany until the late 18th century. However, it often continued to be collected as special Chausseegeld even without its original purpose, namely the provision of guards. – See Brückengeld, Chausseegeld, Citymaut, Fährgeld, Furtgeld, Hafengeld, Maut, Permissionsgeld, Schirmgeld, Torgeld, Transitgeld, Ungeld, Vignette.
