Proposal introduced in the USA at the beginning of 2010 to impose a special tax on all banks. It was right and proper because the financial sector had been saved from collapse by taxpayers’ money in the course of the financial crisis following the subprime crisis (we recover every single dime that the American people are owed). – In Europe, the initiative was generally recommended by finance ministers as worthy of imitation. Admittedly, this is likely to be difficult to implement in the EU because of unanimity in tax matters. Moreover, there are banks and entire groups of institutions – such as the Volksbanken – that have neither requested nor received state aid. – See bank scolding, speculation tax, Tobin tax.
