Fee for safekeeping of garments

Auch in: DE FR

In older documents, a payment to a service provider who usually stored a private household’s winter clothing in the spring and summer clothing in the fall (mothproof). In most cases, these were companies in the textile cleaning trade (A: Putzereien; garment care trade, textile cleaning trade), and this usually involved cleaning the garments accepted for safekeeping. – Until about 1950, woolen fabrics were regularly attacked and damaged by cloth moths (any of various moths of the family TINEIDAE, whose larvae [the newly hatched, wingless, often wormlike form of many insects before metamorphosis] feed on wool, hair, fur, and feathers). It was only then that it was possible to impregnate textiles throughout with chemicals that repel moths and kill them together with their brood.
