European Investment Bank (EIB)

Auch in: CS DA ID JA LT LV NL SK SL SV TR

Financing bank of the EU based in Luxembourg. Its equity capital was subscribed by the member states of the EU. The bank provides loans and guarantees mainly for investments aimed at opening up less developed areas in the internal market. The EBI can also finance investments in third countries with which the EU has concluded economic cooperation agreements. It raises the necessary funds by borrowing on the capital markets. – The EIB operates strictly according to the principles of normal banking operations, but on a non-profit basis. Since July 2009, the EIB has been eligible as a counterparty for ECB monetary policy operations; the same conditions apply to the bank as to other counterparties. – See Stabilization Mechanism, European.
