Doublé coin also called doublee coin (rolled gold coin)

A metal piece used as a means of payment, the core of which is made of base metal, usually zinc, copper or brass. However, in commercial transactions, the coin is issued as a pure, full-weight piece of precious metal – usually pure gold. This is done by – rolling or welding on a very thin sheet of precious metal or – galvanically coating the base metal with gold (by electrolysis). The method described under has been known since antiquity; and there were counterfeiters specializing in these techniques even among the sworn mint masters. The method mentioned under became more and more skilful since about 1880. – Connoisseurs of the market for ancient coins estimate the proportion of pieces forged in one way or another in some genres – including ancient Persian, Greek and Roman gold coins – at up to ninety percent (!!) of the goods traded today. Any new method of detecting a counterfeit is soon outwitted by the coin counterfeiters, as experience has shown. – See Abmangel, Abnutzung, Alliage, Dareiko, Falschgeld, Geld, böse, Geld, schweres, Geschaugeld, Kaisermünze, Katzengeld, Kipper, Kurantmünze, Münze, verfälscht, Münzen-Paradoxon, Münzpflege, Numismatik, Passiergewicht, Remedium, Scheidemünze, Subferraten, Wardein, Wipper.
