Cash cycle

The flow of notes and coins – from the central bank via banks to consumers and – via retailers back – in some cases also via banks, where the central bank does not have a branch – to the central bank. In this chain, cash-in-transit companies (armored car services) take on the task of physical transport and often also the role of cash handlers, preparing the cash for banking purposes and filling the ATMs. – In 2010, the cash cycle from the individual cash offices to the Deutsche Bundesbank was estimated at around 0.6 percent of the gross domestic product. – See Cash, Cash management. – Cf. Deutsche Bundesbank Monthly Report, January 2011, p. 19 ff. (detailed presentation of the cash cycle; many overviews).
