Candle money

Formerly a fixed contribution by the faithful to pay for (wax) candles for use in worship in the parish; today generally replaced by a corresponding offertory for voluntary dedication. – Levy of the faithful for the salary of the priest, at present, especially in Russia, their main salary portion. – Fee for individual official acts of a clergyman (occasional services such as abdication, anointing of the sick, baptism, or wedding); stolgeld – in more recent times, an amount included in the price of lighting with candles by non-electrically lit (luxury) restaurants. – See official money, lighting money, church money, conduct money, light money, memorial money, fair money.
