Button cutter

Thieves who used to work almost commercially, cutting off silver and gold or even gem-studded buttons from the clothing of both ladies and gentlemen, especially in carriages and on ferries as well as at theater, music and dance events. Through fences (dealers in stolen goods), the buttons were reintroduced into the button trade (regular button trading), or the precious metal was melted down and turned into cash in this way. – In order to ward off button-cutting, valuable buttons were connected to clothing by means of very hard metallic rings or shanks. Especially in the gala uniforms (full dress) of senior officers, the precious metal buttons were marked in various ways in order to detect them in the criminal environment.
