Breadline, poverty line, subsistence level
Also an important term for the financial sector, because in the case of private individuals, any claims for payment by creditors must often leave the subsistence level untouched in accordance with the law or supreme court decisions. A distinction is usually made between – the absolute subsistence minimum as the amount necessary to keep a person alive (money necessary for a person to render possible survival) and – the conventional subsistence minimum as that sum which, in addition to bare survival, also permits expenditure for a standard of living corresponding to the lower average of the population. The exact determination of the conventional subsistence minimum is hardly to be made generally valid, because the standard of living can be very different from state to state; one compares at present for example Switzerland with Somalia. The questions in this context have become a special field of social law (social law as the body of rules and statutes intended at supporting the general welfare of all the people, with special reference to labor). – See arrest money, collection, first, sad, fist pledge, loan shark, money collection, customer, lazy, body guarantor, corpse pledge, overpayment, delay, usury.
