Beer money

Auch in: DE FR

In the past, a common tax imposed on brewers, also called beer excise. The income from beer money was not very high. However, they were received on a regular basis and could therefore be planned by the respective tax authorities for longer periods of time. – In older documents also tipping in the meaning of a payment, which is occasionally given to a person by a third party voluntarily and without a legal ground on it, in addition to the wage for the work performance, also called service money and earlier Douceur (tip, douceur). – Token (token, chip) entitling the holder to a certain amount of beer, often used in the past and still today as a promotional tool by various event organizers. The older beer chips are collector’s items; rare pieces today command high prices. – A deduction from wages for boarding by the employer, not necessarily just for beer served. – Formerly also an allowance on pay to units of troops assigned to particularly arduous or hazardous duties. – Child-care allowance in the lower class, because and insofar as the state transfer payment is misappropriated by the adults in the private household for alcoholic beverages (state transfer payment gets alienated by the family for alcoholic beverages). – Begged money (begged money, cadged sums), especially from young people sitting around (punkers; punks), who can be found in groups in urban areas and kill their time with beer drinking (kill the time with beer drinking). – Small sum, nominal fee in return for a favor. – See care money, bibalia, beer voucher, detz, Geldhete, moped money, tip, vesper money, earmarking.
