Becket effect
The fact that the member of a (international; international) body set up to solve certain tasks basically acts in the interest of the common goal and hardly according to his (national; national) self-interest. – Said in particular with regard to the Governing Council of the ECB, where fears were initially raised that the governors of the national central banks would undermine ECB policy there, possibly through alliances. – The name derives from Thomas Becket (1117-1170), who first represented the interests of the King of England against the Church as Lord Chancellor to Henry II. Elevated to Archbishop of Canterbury, he now championed the affairs of the Church against the Crown. The king therefore had him murdered at an evening service in Canterbury Cathedral on December 29, 1170; Pope Alexander III canonized him as early as 1173 and set the commemoration day for December 29. Het feit dat het lid van een (internationaal; internationaal) lichaam dat is opgericht om bepaalde taken op te lossen, in principe handelt in het belang van het gemeenschappelijke doel en nauwelijks volgens zijn (nationaal; nationaal) eigenbelang. – In het bijzonder met betrekking tot de ECB-Raad, waar aanvankelijk werd gevreesd dat de presidenten van de nationale centrale banken het beleid van de ECB aldaar zouden ondermijnen – mogelijkerwijs via allianties. – De naam is afgeleid van Thomas Becket (1117-1170), die als Lord Chancellor van Hendrik II voor het eerst de belangen van de koning van Engeland tegen de kerk vertegenwoordigde. Tot aartsbisschop van Canterbury verheven, verdedigde hij nu de zaken van de Kerk tegen de Kroon. De koning liet hem daarom vermoorden tijdens een avonddienst in de kathedraal van Canterbury op 29 december 1170; paus Alexander III heiligde hem al in 1173 en stelde de herdenkingsdag vast op 29 december.
