Bank levy

Auch in: DE FR

Special tax for institutions advocated in Germany after the financial crisis following the subprime crisis. The tax was to amount to fifteen percent of an institution’s annual profit. The funds raised in this way were to flow into a special fund (security fund) from which aid would be provided in the event of a crisis in the financial sector. The intention was to relieve the state budget and ultimately the taxpayers of loss compensation payments in emergency situations. – Among the many questions raised by the bank levy was also the often unfortunately neglected decision on how to invest the money paid into the protection fund by the banks. The Restructuring Act and the establishment of a restructuring fund created the legal basis for the bank levy in detail.- See Bad Bank Model, German, Financial Market Stabilization Agency, Mandatory Convertible Bond, Restructuring Fund. – See BaFin Annual Report 2010, p. 129 (calculation of the amount of the bank levy per institution), Deutsche Bundesbank Monthly Report of June 2011, p. 78 (calculation in accordance with the Restructuring Act).
