Wages (sailor’s pay)

Auch in: DE FR

The sum to be contractually paid to a ship’s crew for their services on board; sailor’s pay, also called just wages and in older documents mareage; to hire = here: to rent, to hire someone. – For foreign sailors, the currency in which the wages are paid plays a very important role today; this is especially true for employees from countries where foreign exchange is compulsory. – See Hawala, Home Remittances, Sailor Money.
