A contract that was common in the past in which a lender lends money (cargo-based lending; grossavanture money) to a shipping company for the purchase of goods – usually from overseas – in return for high interest. In return, the lender receives a real right (holding real right) to the goods. However, he assumes the full risk in the event of peril on the sea (average = taking over financial liability resulting from loss of or damage to a ship or its cargo). Avantur = here: advance payment. – See General average, Average, York-Antwerp Rules.
