In the case of many exchange-traded commodities, a reduction in units arising from an inherent characteristic of things in stock; it includes decreases caused by evaporation, dehydration, leakage, and oxidation. The usual shrinkage rates for individual commodities are usually specified in the general terms and conditions of business of the commodity exchange. – See Underlying, Shelf life.
