Tanzkonzessionsgeld (payment for the permission of dance entertainment)

Auch in: DE

In German territorial states, a fee formerly payable by innkeepers for permission to hold dance entertainments on their premises. As a rule, the amount of the payment depended on the number of dancers. The innkeepers usually apportioned the sum imposed on them as payers to the dancers, unless the dance fee had previously been imposed by decree on each dancer. Often the tax was also staggered according to local dancers as well as dancers coming from other places. – The Hessian-Darmstadt ordinance of June 29, 1751, states: “Jews must in future … pay double the dance concession fee, according to the above-mentioned rate.” – See beggar’s bell, barrel organ money, fee, wedding table money, church concession money, music money, merrymaking fee, tolerance money, sparing money.
