Renewable electricity output is the quantity of electrical energy generated during a given period by facilities using renewable sources, measured in gigawatt-hours (GWh). The measure encompasses hydroelectricity, wind power, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal generation, marine and geothermal energy, biomass, biogas, liquid biofuels and renewable municipal waste. Electricity generated by releasing water from pumped-storage facilities is not counted, because pumped storage involves the discharge of previously stored electricity rather than primary generation from a renewable source.
