In older documents, a person in general, and a merchant in particular, who has suddenly risen to wealth through profitable transactions, but has not yet assumed the new role that has thus fallen to him (one who has suddenly risen to an unaccustomed position of wealth and has not yet gained the prestige, dignity, or manner associated with it, resp. has up to now not gained social acceptance by others). – See Moneyed aristocracy.
