Institution founded in connection with the London Club in 1983 by globally active banks – also memorably called the “banks’ self-help group” – based in Washington, DC. Its main tasks are: – to develop common attitudes among banks toward debtor countries, – to improve information on debtor countries and to exchange relevant findings within the circle of participants; in practice, the IIF is the evidence center on the actual debt levels of individual countries, – to propose means to prevent and
contribute to overcoming international debt crises as well as – triggered by the subprime crisis – also – enforce a global code of conduct for all companies operating in the financial sector in order to avoid the threat of overregulation. – See Evidence Center, London Club, Paris Club, Prague Proclamation, Debt Repatriation Mechanism, Independent.
