Index tracking (also usually referred to as index copying)

The exact replication of a stock portfolio to a stock index, in such a way that all stocks in the portfolio are represented in the same proportion as in the index (participating shares in the same proportion as the index), such as the Dax. This investment behavior is based on the idea that a higher return can hardly be achieved by any other stock selection than that expressed in the index level. – See herd behavior, index funds, exchange-traded, price collapse, performance. – Cf. 2004 BaFin Annual Report, p. 182 (index tracking in hedge funds).
