Grants of patents (patent issuances)

The number of patents granted in an economy or currency area is an important yardstick for assessing the value of money, especially in the longer term. Central banks therefore monitor this parameter. – In Europe as a whole, a total of 52,000 patents were granted in 2009. Just 24 patents were granted to Portugal; 2,421 patents were granted to Switzerland, which is three million times smaller in terms of population; 11,384 patents were granted to Germany, which has more than ten times the population of Switzerland. Demographic developments give rise to fears that Portugal and other countries in the south of the euro area will not be able to catch up in the future in terms of patent grants. This is because their innovative strength is very low – not least because of the brain drain exacerbated by the poor economic situation. – See blackmail potential, research ratio, Greece crisis, Portugal crisis, competitiveness, interest island, two-pillar principle.
