In the sense of the economic theory usable means, to which – rarity (scarcity), – use (utility: the property adhering to the good, for whose sake it is desired by humans) and – accessibility (possibility of human control: metals on the moon are yet inaccessible) comes. – Goods are the condition for the preservation and organization of the life of every human being. Already for the survival, thus only for the preservation of the bodily existence, everybody is compulsively and continuously dependent on goods. Because the human needs are almost without exception repetitive wants. The consumption and use of goods is therefore also “the sole end and purpose of production” (Adam Smith, 1723-1790). – According to their form one distinguishes – material goods (physical goods, in the terminology of the German-language official statistics commodities): they have tangible, material property and – immaterial goods (Intangibles), like all services as well as rights and contracts of each kind, for example patents, trademark rights claims and liabilities. – The term “goods” (people) is therefore a generic term (hypernym). “Goods” (men) and “services” (women) are the two subterms (minor terms, hyponyms) assigned to it. Therefore, it is logically wrong to speak of “goods and services” (men and women), as even highly paid members of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank do in their speeches. – See money purpose, good, public, ungoods, traffic accident, assets, assets.
