ECB accountability

The obligation of the ECB, as a self-governing institution not subject to parliamentary control, to inform the public about its activities. According to the unanimous opinion of even its critics, this has been done to their full satisfaction so far. The monthly reports and the annual report published each spring alone describe, explain and justify all of the ECB’s measures in detail and in plain language. – In 2006 and 2007, the ECB’s budget expenditures amounted to 326 million euros and 355 million euros, respectively. Their proper use is audited by the European Court of Auditors; the respective audit reports are published and available on the Internet. – See the chapter on “Public relations” in the ECB’s Annual Report.
